GILA RIVER INDIAN COMMUNITY DISTRICT 1 SENIOR CENTER
This Senior Center is a safe gathering space for Senior’s of the District 1 Community and provides social interaction, friendship, activities and nutritious meals. Interior spaces include a large multipurpose room with volleyball courts, a commercial kitchen, fitness room, private senior organization room and administration offices.
INSPIRED DESIGN:
Best practices were incorporated in the design to include considerations for elderly limitations. The exterior was designed to have a residential feel and a large covered patio area along with outdoor cooking area, landscaped gardens and fire pit provides a restful sense of place. The facility is designed for multiple uses centered around chair volleyball courts – their main recreation activity.
THOUGHTFUL STEWARDSHIP:
The intent was to provide both interior and exterior spaces where the elders can share their life experiences and Tribal history with the young Community members.
CREATIVE TEAMWORK:
DWL worked side-by-side with Community elders in creating a facility that would be a home away from home.
