PRESCOTT REGIONAL AIRPORT NEW TERMINAL BUILDING

The new 17,997 SF passenger Terminal Building replaced an antiquated 1948 terminal. Included are terminal-related improvements on airside such as apron, lighting and connector taxiway. This project dramatically improved safety, security and efficiency while enhancing the passenger and community experience.

INSPIRED DESIGN:

PRC is truly a unique architectural statement with all-wood structural roof assemblies that glow from carefully placed up-lighting. It is a modern interpretation of the region’s historical and cultural influences as well as geographic features, while retaining the genuine and rustic nature of the Prescott area. During the visioning process, the “big roof” concept was chosen and was inspired by the Prescott region, Watson Lake and the grassy rolling hills.

THOUGHTFUL STEWARDSHIP:

Because the terminal was such a community-oriented terminal, it was imperative to prioritize the optimal use of finances, time and space available, staying accountable to everyone who comes in contact with the design. The Airport was designed to be environmentally-sensitive, accessible, functional, aesthetically pleasing, value conscious and comfortable to all ages and abilities.

CREATIVE TEAMWORK:

During the early design phase, DWL conducted visioning sessions with a committee consisting of aviation staff and the community. The group developed aspirational goals and critical priorities that the design team implemented throughout the design. Selection of Douglas Fir as the roof structure reflects the “ranches” of the Mountain West for its beautiful and authentic nature. As the linear and expandable building negotiates between the elements of ground and sky, creating views of the surrounding context, allowing abundant natural light to wash over the interiors.

ENDURING COMMITMENT:

The new Prescott Regional Airport Terminal has been a goal for more than ten years for the airport and community. DWL is grateful to be a part of such a big effort on the part of the airport staff, city council, community and FAA to finally get the project built. This project is a testament to a community coming together to fully support the program.
