Midwestern University Glendale Large Animal Facility

The 69,096 SF Large Animal Facility is a first-of-its-kind teaching, research and diagnostic center in the state, designed for large animals, including horses, cows and other ruminants. Two housing wings accommodate 20 horses, 20 cows and additional species while serving as hands-on teaching environments for animal care, handling and treatment. Classrooms, demonstration areas and stalls are equipped with advanced audiovisual systems to record and broadcast procedures in real time. Medical teaching spaces include a bovine chute and tilt area, equine stocks for minor procedures, an anesthesiology and recovery suite and isolation stalls for infectious cases. The pathology lab supports post-mortem examination of large specimens, including elephants and giraffes, with a hoist and rail system connecting to walk-in freezers and a necropsy suite, along with downdraft tables and biosafety cabinets for smaller and avian species. An enhanced ABSL-3 lab anchors the research program, providing a state-of-the-art biosecure environment for immediate pathogen response during suspected outbreaks.
