Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport – Terminal 3 Modernization
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Arizona’s main transportation hub, will be the crown jewel among the mountainous landscape, following the completion of the Terminal 3 Modernization. Uniquely located in the heart of the bustling City of Phoenix, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is undergoing a major transformation with the Terminal 3 Modernization Program. The comprehensive project includes modernization of the main terminal building, an all-new linear south concourse and a modernization of the existing north concourse.
To remain operational through construction and have as little impact to the passenger as possible, the program is broken into multiple construction phases with the first phase of the Terminal Processor opened winter of 2016.
With the goal of creating a world-class facility, a grand gathering space reminiscent of great transportation halls of the past – was re-imagined at the passenger level. Under-utilized mezzanines were removed to create the “Great Hall.” In addition to transforming the current passenger hall with higher volumes, views, and natural light, the Great Hall provides a post-security centralized passenger amenities area, with new shops and restaurants.
Travelers will also appreciate a large consolidated security checkpoint to decrease travel time to their destination, expanded airline ticket counter space to make check-in more convenient and more baggage handling capacity – all with the goal to provide passengers with a superior travel experience. With 14 new skylights and abundant natural light from opening up the 30-year old terminal’s façade, the design provides a unique connection back to the community with views of downtown Phoenix and the surrounding mountain parks, unlike most airports around the world.
The Terminal Modernization Program will provide the City of Phoenix the new facility it needs to better serve the aviation community and set the standard for passenger experience. Future phases of the project will see the completion of the terminal, a 15-gate south concourse, 10-gate north concourse and additional concession and retail offerings, all with a goal of improving the way one travels through America’s Friendliest Airport®.
