PHOENIX SKY HARBOR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TERMINAL 3 MODERNIZATION
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport’s Terminal 3 Modernization is a top-to-bottom renovation of the entire facility, originally designed by DWL in the late 1970s.
The comprehensive project included a complete modernization of the main terminal building, an all-new linear 15-gate south concourse, and modernization of the existing 10-gate north concourse.
INSPIRED DESIGN:
Terminal 3 is an elegant blending of aesthetics and function, efficiency and contextuality. Function is crucial for airport operations, therefore DWL’s focus on creating truly right-sized and usable spaces was key. Inbound and outbound passenger flow through the building was studied, developing the most efficient solution for the 50-year old structure. Unlike many urban airports, PHX is located in the heart of Phoenix-metro area. By opening up the exterior façade to the surrounding context of city and mountain park views allows the passenger to orient themselves within the Valley of the Sun.

DWL was privileged to design the T3 Modernization for the City, the aviation department, airlines, tenants and most importantly, our community. We take stewardship of our community very seriously—always providing thoughtful design that carefully balances sustainability with the project’s critical priorities. All three phases achieved LEED Silver Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
CREATIVE TEAMWORK:
The T3 Modernization was a complex project requiring more than 30 design and engineering consultants as well as input from multiple aviation departments. DWL led the dissemination and flow of information amongst the team, eventually becoming a well-oiled organization. As the Architect of Record, DWL was proud to lead such a robust team, including two associate design firms.
