Athavan is a registered architect with more than 17 years of progressive experience in architectural design and in building client relationships. His passion for energy conscious building design has driven his efforts to become an industry expert in energy efficiency and sustainability. He has more than a decade of security sensitive design and project management experience in judicial, correctional facilities and now aviation, specializing in passenger terminal design and checkpoints. Athavan has taken his passion to a higher level within the DWL office by focusing on net-zero building design and currently leads the AIA 2030 commitment for energy conservation within the office. He continues his efforts to guide the firm and our clients’ projects towards implementing economically viable measures through data-driven sustainable design.
Athavan is a LEED accredited professional and a certified energy auditor. In 2015, he was recognized as one of ENR’s top 20 construction professionals under the age of 40. He has volunteered and taught sustainability and LEED at Arizona State University’s Del E. Webb School of Construction as an industry expert. He served as a board member of the Arizona Chapter of the US Green Building Council and has been a volunteer of the organization for several years. Athavan has also chaired several committees within the Arizona Chapter of the USGBC, including the Regional Priority Credit task force for LEED version 4.
