Laughlin/Bullhead Int’l Airports’ ARFF Station – Featured in Metal Construction News!

Metal Construction_DWLThe aircraft rescue fire station at Laughlin-Bullhead International Airport is the first building designed with a new master plan for the airport. It sets the character and material palettes for future development including a new terminal.

Steve Rao, president of DWL Architects + Planners Inc., says metals were specified for strength, lightness and durability. “We chose metallic silver for the roof and wall panels to evoke an image of flying,” he says. “In addition, the building was designed as if it emerges from the base of the mountain.”

The 13,000-square-foot fire station is located approximately 50 feet down the side of a mountain and approximately 75,000 cubic yards of material was removed from the site. This led to placing a public entrance on the second floor and airside access on the first floor.

Progressive Roofing installed 6,418 square feet of Rollfab Metal Products’ 24-gauge pre-weathered Galvalume SL-175 metal wall panels, 9,819 square feet of 22-gauge pre-weathered Galvalume MS-200 metal roof panels and 2,957 square feet of 24-gauge pre-weathered Galvalume FP-10 metal panels on the exterior soffit and lobby ceiling. Additionally, the project utilized 828 square feet of Armstrong Ceilings’ Metalworks Welded Wire 2 Cell in Gunmetal Grey on the corridor ceiling.

Rao says metal finishes were adapted to site conditions. “One such example in our project is the perforated panels at the screenwalls and mechani- cal yard; these were powdercoated instead of coil coated to address potential weathering issues at perforations,” he says. Progressive Roofing installed 162 square feet of Rollfab Metal Products’ 24-gauge SL-175 perforated screenwall panels powdercoated to match pre-weathered Galvalume.

The fire station features a command center on the second floor that overlooks the airport and serves as the operations room during emergencies. Metal was used for the walls, roof, ceilings, soffits and screening throughout the interior and exterior of the building. The project was completed in February 2013.

“Using planar forms, the building exudes an aesthetic balance between layers of diverse materials,” Rao says. “Metal roof and panels created such a layer fusing the building to its site, while reflecting the picturesque colors of the Mojave Desert landscape.”

Chicago Cubs Spring Training Facility Sets Attendance Record

The Cubs led in attendance for the second straight year in their new park – a collaborative design effort between DWL and Populous – and set a new record for most fans in a spring season. They drew over 222,000 fans this spring to the fabulous, new Sloan Park, an average of over 14,800 per game. A crowd of 15,331 at Sloan Park on Friday, March 6, 2015, was a Spring Training record for both the Cactus League and Grapefruit League, topping the old mark the Cubs set last March 25 for a game against the Angels.  Last year, the Cactus League generated an estimated $632 million in economic benefit for the region, according to the Cactus League Baseball Association.

North Scottsdale Park & Ride wins ENR Southwest Award

The North Scottsdale Park has been honored once again in 2014 – this time by Engineering News-Record magazine. The project was awarded Best Project in the Green Category, does sizegenetics really work?. The park and ride lot qualifies as a net-zero facility, with the photovoltaic panel system producing more energy than the site consumes.

Judges were impressed with the effort spent designing and constructing a project type that is often overlooked, with one suggesting this facility could serve as a prototype for other owners. Judges also hailed the project’s canopy “wing” design, which features metal shingles-coated with a special finish that can gently bend, producing an effect that mimics a bird’s flashing feathers

North Scottsdale Park & Ride receives multiple awards from MCA

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) recognized its 2014 Chairman’s Award recipients at the METALCON Tradeshow and Conference at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver on October 1. Award recipients were determined based on overall appearance, significance of metal in the project, innovative use of metal, and the role of metal in achieving project objectives. DWL’s North Scottsdale Park and Ride project won the Metal Roofing category.

In June 2014, the North Scottsdale Park and Ride project received the magazine’s Judges Award for the passenger platform’s metal roofing. The canopy is clad in 12,000 square feet of custom-fabricated metal panels coated with PPG Duranar VARI-Cool IR reflective coating. The judges loved the dynamic wing-shaped canopy and how the metal panels gave the architectural element texture and depth. In many ways, the passenger platform reads more sculptural than architectural.
