Pipeline Worldwide – Battle of the Boxes Competition

This year, DWL participated in Pipeline’s Worldwide Battle of the Boxes Competition to support healthcare workers in Uganda. This competition challenged three teams to convert a standard shipping container into practical residential units for healthcare workers in East Africa. Our team, #1Team4Uganda – DWL Architects + Planners, DMB, McCarthy Building Companies, East Valley Institute of Technology, Clearway Energy and HonorHealth – was honored and beyond grateful to have received four of the six awards.

🏆 Best in Design
🏆 Best in Sustainability
🏆 MVP Award for Curtis Ruhl from East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT)
Our container was be shipped overseas to Uganda, Africa where it will provide housing for six healthcare workers at a refugee settlement.
A huge thank you to all team members for all your dedication and hard work to accomplish this project.

Run the Runway

For the past three years, DWL has participated in Run the Runway located at our recently completed project–Scottsdale Airport. Many members of our team, along with their families ran and walked directly on the airfield runway in the 10k-5k-dash to support Playworks Arizona and Scottsdale Airport. All proceeds benefit Playworks Arizona a nonprofit organization encouraging kids to stay active and build valuable life skills through play.

Since 2007, DWL has participated in the Phoenix CANstruction competition, which showcases colossal structures made entirely out of full cans of food. The creations are displayed as a public art exhibition, and afterwards all food is donated to the St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance. DWL’s commitment alone to this event has provided more than 30,000 can donations to the Food Bank.

The Support Sky Harbor Coalition, in partnership with the City of Phoenix Neighborhood Services Department, organizes Spring and Fall clean-up days. These events bring hundreds of volunteers together to spruce up neighborhoods west of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Coalition Board member and DWL President Steve Rao, along with DWL staff, regularly participate in these clean-up events.

DWL participates in the annual Jet Pull event, which raises money for the United Way. Teams of 20 people are assembled and pay for an entry to compete for the top honor of pulling a 95,000-pound Airbus 319 fifteen feet in the fastest time.
