DWL Architects + Planners, Inc.

Arizona State University Main Campus - Tempe, Arizona
DWL’s collaboration with Arizona State University has created many signature projects around the Tempe campus, including the Charles Trumbull Hayden Library (1966) and adjacent pedestrian mall, Wells Fargo Arena (1974) with seating for approximately 15,000, and the Noble Science and Engineering Library (1982) with one of the largest collections of technical literature in the country. In 2005, DWL transformed the University’s 100-year-old President’s Cottage, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, into the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing.

DWL has also led expansion projects to existing facilities on campus: the School of Music Addition (with The Mathes Group, 1992), a simple and straightforward building that visually blends the disparate designs of buildings around the site, including Frank Lloyd Wright’s Gammage Auditorium; and the seven-story Intercollegiate Athletics Building (1988) located at the entrance to Sun Devil Stadium, which features the University’s Hall of Fame exhibit.

Recent work with Arizona State University includes several projects built in partnership with American Campus Communities: Vista del Sol mixed-use student housing community (with IKON.5 Architects and Craycroft-Mcelroy-Hendryx Architects, 2008); Barrett Honors College (with IKON.5 Architects, 2009); and the ASU Police Building (2007).
