Scottsdale Booster Pump Station 179 – Scottsdale, Arizona
This project blends engineering, art and community functionality. Included in the Downtown Revitalization Program, this project addresses the City’s changing social environment, growing economic profile and embrace of sustainability.

The project was designed to meet Downtown Scottsdale’s increasing water needs, but it also serves a dual purpose: that of a booster pump station and a multi-use public space that includes a park, water feature, existing public art installation, performance venue, restroom, trolley station and destination on the City’s ArtWalk.

Through efficient space planning, the design team was able to incorporate a robust pump station into a limited footprint. To achieve a sculptural form, DWL used a series of inclined planes to enclose the pump equipment. The building slopes away from the street, serving as a backdrop for a small plaza that supports the existing art installation and a variety of public events such as outdoor performances. Glass tiles at the top of the station’s wall recall how water seeps from cliff faces, and a symbolic moving ‘stream’ flows along the bottom.
