Terminal 4, Concourse ‘D’ – Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport
Concourse ‘D’ is the seventh DWL-designed concourse to be constructed at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport’s Terminal 4. The 180,000 s.f. project includes a Transfer Bridge with four moving walkways, a Passenger Bridge with a new security checkpoint, and the main five-level concourse building. The passenger area, totaling 38,500 s.f., was programmed for eight new aircraft gates, passenger waiting areas, and food/beverage and retail shell areas. In contrast to DWL’s previous concourses, the client’s objectives included creating a more passenger-friendly space. In addition to larger spaces in the plan, the design team increased the volume of the spaces by raising ceilings, particularly above the central spine of the building.

The overall concept of Concourse ‘D’ is that of a grand public transportation space inspired by components of aeronautical engineering and the excitement of flight, while maintaining a cohesiveness with the original Terminal Four building (also designed by DWL). The tapered roof beams emulate the chevron shape of an aircraft wing, and the roof drain pipes reflect the landing gear touching down on the runway. To promote the feeling of flight, the aeronautical shapes are carried throughout the project in light fixtures, flight information cabinets, terrazzo and carpet patterns, gate canopies, signage and guard rails.
